Watford is in the county of Hertfordshire, on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, 17 miles from London. Humans first settled in the area centuries ago. However, it was the railway that came to the town in 1837, linking it to London and Birmingham, which led to its development as a regional centre for the Home Counties. Today, J D Wetherspoon, Camelot Group and Mothercare all have headquarters in Watford. Harlequin Shopping Centre opened in the town in 1992, offering 140 new shops. Recently it changed its name to Intu Watford and is still a focal point for shoppers. On the nearby High Street, there are bars and restaurants catering to every taste. The town has many parks and green spaces, several museums and theatres, and of course, Watford F.C., where Elton John still holds honorary life presidency of the club. It is also close to Leavesden Film Studios, where some of the Harry Potter films were made. Concerts by premier music industry stars take place at the Colosseum entertainment complex. The Enterprise Rent-A-Car site is a mile outside the town on the Cassio Road and is easily accessible by public transport or by taking up Enterprise’s pick-up offer.
